The ATM Industry Association has announced the release of its best practices for ATM-skimming prevention, coming on the heels of the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council's release of new requirements for preventing skimming at POS devices.
Mike Lee, chief executive of ATMIA, says ATMs are safe and convenient, but skimming threats should always be top-of-mind:
The ATM is exceptionally safe and convenient to use, but that doesn't mean there are no threats. Skimming is the one we most need to counter.
Skimming is often accompanied by the capture of customer PIN data, making it a high-profile problem, says Mike Urban, senior director of fraud solutions for Fair Isaac Corp. and a leading industry expert on skimming:
While ATM security has been steadily improving over the last decade, thanks to standards the ATM Industry Association has been developing and publishing, there has also been in an increase global organized crime targeting ATMs for illicit gains. The ‘Best Practices for Preventing Skimming' is the next logical step in protecting consumers and resisting organized criminals.
One of the authors of the new manual, Douglas Russell, director of DFR Risk Management Ltd., has compiled an international classification system for skimming devices and skimming methods, to provide the industry with a better understanding of the range and types of skimming attacks and how to combat them.
Jeffery Miller of Edge of One Inc. and a co-author of the manual, says education is the key to prevention:
Educating the customer on detection and prevention is a critical component to reducing the global threat of ATM skimming.
