Diebold Inc. has announced that Erste Bank Hungary has signed with Diebold to implement a payment solution for utility bills through its ATMs.
According to a news release from Diebold, Hungary's OCR-based utility bills are traditionally paid at post offices or via wire transfer from home Internet banking. For many uses, a proof of payment is required — the detachable part of the bill, stamped by a post officer and returned to the customer.
Transaction amount, identification and other information are printed in the bottom part of the utility bill with OCR characters. Diebold's bulk-deposit module on the Opteva ATM processes the images, converts them to Hungarian Post-compatible formats, copies transaction data and stamps images to the bills. The information is then sent to the host and printed copy of customer portion of the bill is printed on the receipt.

Erste Bank will pilot the bill-payment service on 12 Opteva ATMs.
